Named after its inventor Roux, a French surgeon, Roux-en-Y bypass is a severe obesity treatment that can significantly decrease the excess body weight of an obese individual. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) endorses in their Consensus report this bariatric procedure as a way to effectively treat seriously obese individuals, especially those who are suffering from fatal conditions associated with morbid obesity.

Today, the Roux-en-Y bypass is the most common and most employed bariatric procedure in the United States. Around 70% of bariatric surgeons primarily use this procedure in many of their weight loss surgeries. There are other types of gastric bypass methods like Biliopancreatic Diversion Stomach bypass and Duodenal Switch Stomach Bypass, but the Roux-en-Y bypass is significantly easier and more efficient.

For more than 30 years, the Roux-en-Y bypass procedure has been performed by a number of bariatric surgeons around the world. All throughout these years, the method has shown an incredibly high long term success rate. The procedure has also impressively established a less than 1% mortality rate, as well as post operation complications and issues. An initial 50% to 75% weight loss can be expected among many of the patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y bypass. That is quite an impressive result, because it nearly eliminates many serious health issues that come with severe obesity.

The basic foundation of a Roux-en-Y bypass procedure is really quite the same for many gastric bypass surgeries. It generally focuses on two fronts: the restrictive aspect and the malabsorptive aspect of the process. The first aspect, which is the restrictive part of the procedure, reduces the amount of food that an individual can eat. The second, which is the malabsorptive aspect, reduces the level of absorption of nutrients and calories, which comes from the food taken in.

Many of you may not know that a human stomach can stretch to up to around 1,000 milliliters. A bariatric surgeon, using the Roux-en-Y bypass procedure, will try to reduce the stomach capacity to around 15 to 30 milliliters. This is the restrictive part of the whole procedure. It can considerably reduce the amount of food that the stomach can contain. The second part of the procedure will be the malabsorption aspect. This is where the bariatric surgeon will attempt to bypass a substantial portion of the gastrointestinal tract, since the whole process of absorption of nutrients and calories takes place in the small intestine.

Both the restrictive and malabsorptive aspect of the procedure is what makes the Roux-en-Y bypass quite a remarkable, as well as an effective, treatment for obesity.

Many seriously obese individuals will turn to stomach stapling as a last resort to resolve their weight issues. A lot of people out there who suffer from morbid obesity, and many of the health conditions that go along with obesity, will require this type of procedure to combat their excess weight issues. Some weight problems are just too serious to treat with conventional weight loss methods. In cases such as these, stomach stapling would seem to be the final option.

In a stomach stapling procedure, the bariatric surgeon will try to create a pouch in the stomach; this will make the patient feel full sooner than they normally would, which results in less food intake. However, procedures such as these may present serious complications that could endanger the health of the patient. Some complications may even be fatal. There are complications that may be precisely related to the surgical procedure itself, or complications and risks resulting to the hasty weight loss.

A morbidly obese individual may suffer from type II diabetes or a heart condition, which can make the whole procedure even more complicated and risky. The risk of complications in a stomach stapling procedure is highly probable mainly because of obesity itself. However, according to the University of Michigan Health System, less than three out of 200 people die due to weight loss surgeries. While it may be true that the risk statistics show low death rates in general, obese people with heart conditions and other serious health issues are certainly prone to the complications that stomach stapling may present.

Some individuals who have undergone stomach stapling may experience deficiencies of vitamins and minerals and in some cases, even dehydration. Some people develop intolerance to certain types of food, while others can suffer from low blood sugar. Other post stomach stapling surgery complications could include gallstones, kidney stones, and bleeding ulcers. Luckily, some of these complications are not that common among stomach stapling patients.

Some post stomach stapling surgery complications can be quite nasty such as the one called dumping syndrome. When an individual who underwent stomach stapling eats sugary or fatty foods, the food will tend to go from the stomach through the small intestine too quickly. As a result, the person may experience gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, while others may also experience dizziness, as well as sweating.

Although some people may believe that weight loss procedures such as stomach stapling are the cure for obesity, its possible complications should be seriously considered before undergoing surgeries such as this.

Gastric bypass, one of the most effective ways of fighting and solving obesity problems, has become increasingly popular in the past years. It is the best option for people suffering from morbid obesity, especially for those who have tried several ways of losing weight like going on a diet or exercising. Gastric bypass surgery can help improve several conditions that result from being morbidly obese or overweight. Some of these problems include hypertension, sleep apnea, diabetes, and heart-related diseases. This is why more and more people choose to undergo the procedure, no matter how much a gastric bypass cost is.

There are actually several elements that you need to consider when talking about gastric bypass cost. Your expenses will normally cover the following:

hospital facility fee

laboratory and x-ray fees

anesthesia fees

surgeon’s fee

after surgery or post-operative care expenses

A basic gastric bypass surgery will have varying costs, normally somewhere between $18,000 to $35,000, depending on some factors, including:

Patient’s location. The cost of surgery in urban areas is ultimately higher compared to those who are in other areas. Overhead expenses are relatively higher in urban areas.

The length of stay in the hospital.

The health plan that you have.

Before the surgery proper, pre-operative counseling is needed, especially since there is a diet that needs to be followed in order for you to lose some of your excess weight. This can also be a factor in some hospitals and facilities when it comes to gastric bypass cost.

To make sure that you get the best out of what you will be paying for, it is important for you to consult with your doctor, or with any health professional who is knowledgeable about gastric bypass surgery. Be sure to ask all the vital questions like the actual cost of the surgery, what is included in the package, all necessary insurance information especially those pertaining to coverage, and possible financing plans that you can avail of.

Getting the right insurance is vital for patients who do not have enough financial means. Nowadays, there are a good number of insurance providers who are willing to shoulder the bill for your gastric bypass surgery, especially if your doctor makes it a point to stress your immediate need to undergo the procedure.

Before you plunge into the procedure, make sure that you have studied all possible means that you can get in order to cover for your gastric bypass cost. Remember, it pays to be informed. So, talk to your doctor first before deciding on anything.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, or RYGB, is a different procedural type of stomach bypass that may reduce obesity. It is named after a good French surgeon, Roux, who invented it. It is one of the bariatric procedures endorsed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Report as a form of treatment for serious clinical obesity.

Many of you may not know that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is among the most well known and most performed bariatric procedures in the United States today. Approximately seven out of ten bariatric surgeons employ this method as their main procedure when it comes to weight loss. Compared to other types of gastric bypass procedures such as Biliopancreatic Diversion Stomach Bypass or Duodenal Switch Stomach Bypass, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is relatively easier.

In addition, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass has been performed by many bariatric surgeons for more than 30 years. Over those years, the procedure has established an impressively high long-term success rate. It has also demonstrated a remarkably low mortality rate (less than 1% to be precise) and post-op complications. Most patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass usually lose around 50% to 75% of their original excess body fat. This is a significant weight loss because it virtually reduces many fatal conditions that are associated with morbid obesity.

The underlying principle behind the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is actually similar for all stomach bypass operations. Gastric bypass procedures tackle two basic factors. First is the restrictive aspect of the procedure. This reduces the volume of food which the individual can eat. The second is the malabsorptive aspect of the procedure. This part of the procedure reduces the absorption of the nutrients and calories that comes from the food intake.

A typical human stomach can stretch up to about a thousand milliliters. In a Roux surgery, the surgeon reduces the stomach capacity to about 15 ml to 30 ml in size, which drastically decreases the quantity of food that can be contained in a single meal. In the second part of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, this is the malabsorption part; the surgeon bypasses a considerable portion of the small intestine, since the absorption of the nutrients and calories normally takes place in the intestinal track. Hence, fewer calories will be absorbed by the body because of the shortened absorption process.

The combination of both the restrictive part and the malabsorptive aspect of the procedure is what makes the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass an impressively efficient weight loss treatment. However, reaching the full potential of this treatment will require some changes in the patient’s lifestyle through healthy diet and regular exercise.

The selection process for good bariatric surgeons can be as daunting as it is important. In fact, it is a very significant first step, since you will be putting your life into that surgeon’s hands.

One of the first things you should consider when choosing bariatric surgeons is their experience in performing bariatric surgeries. Research and studies conducted by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery have shown that highly experienced bariatric surgeons have essentially reduced the rates of post surgery complications.

The surgeon that you pick should have plenty of experience in performing the procedure that you want done. Bariatric surgeons should also be highly experienced in performing either less invasive operating procedures or open procedures. If possible, you might want to grab an opportunity to have a chat with the surgeon’s other patients. This may give you some inkling of what kind of bariatric surgeons they are. Patients and individuals who are more than willing to recommend their surgeon to family, friends, and associates, as well as interested parties, are actually telling you of the surgeon’s high quality skills.

A Center of Excellence, or COE, designation can also be a great indication or gauge for good bariatric surgeons. This is because COE surgeons, as well as their programs, have to meet strict guidelines and criteria with regards to the quality of care to satisfactorily be designated a COE. Another thing you must consider in choosing good bariatric surgeons is the commitment of surgeons to the success of the procedure, whatever it may be. Surgeons should give post operation care by means of follow up appointments, support group resources, and other ways as needed. The success of your surgery and recovery can be enhanced by these post operation care.

As a patient, making well informed decisions and having the knowledge of what to expect may help you succeed, as well as manage, the potential challenges. Here are some tips to help you more in choosing good bariatric surgeons.

Try to find out if your health insurance, if you have one, covers bariatric surgery. If it doesn’t, or if you have none, learn if the bariatric surgeons or bariatric program provides financing or payment options.

Find out if there are information seminars and support groups regarding bariatric surgery in your area. If you find some, try attending as many as possible. This can help you choose good bariatric surgeons.

When you have time, try to prepare a list of questions you would want to ask the bariatric surgeons.

The task of choosing good bariatric surgeons can be a difficult one. However, with the help of your family, friends, associates, and this article, you can find the right surgeon that is perfect for you. After all, the success of the procedure will depend on you and the skills and talent of the bariatric surgeons.

A lot of morbidly obese individuals go under the knife through gastro bypass surgery, because it is very effective if done correctly. Studies have proven that this procedure can help obese individuals lose up to 80% of excess body fat. However, gastro bypass surgery is a medical procedure that needs to be thought of carefully. It needs quite a lot of consideration. One cannot just go to a doctor’s office and say, “I’d like a gastro bypass surgery, please”.

You will have to realize that this kind of procedure is not some magic formula that will make all your weight problems go away. When patients go through gastro bypass surgery, their efforts do not just end there. Lifestyle changes will have to be made. Healthy diets and regular exercise are still essential to losing weight, even if you already had gastro bypass surgery. People who underwent this kind of procedure will still have to see their doctor to assess any changes in their condition.

Gastro bypass surgery is a serious medical procedure that can be life changing, and for this reason alone, you have to weigh the benefits and risks of this procedure. You will have to carefully consider the pros and cons of this process. To help you out, here are some pros and cons you should learn about gastro bypass surgery.

Pros/Benefits:

Around 70% of individuals who underwent gastro bypass surgery went off all of their blood pressure medications, because they’re no longer showing signs of having high blood pressure.

Around 80% of people who have undergone gastro bypass surgery are showing normal cholesterol levels within two to three months after the operation.

This procedure can significantly reduce the risk of having heart disease.

Patients diagnosed with type II diabetes will have a great chance to reduce the need for any medication regarding the disease.

A strong possibility of decreased asthma attacks.

Patients who have suffered from respiratory insufficiency will find that after gastro bypass surgery, their respiratory problems have reduced or disappeared completely.

Gastro bypass patients can possibly be relieved of acid reflux disease, as well as sleep apnea syndrome.

Cons/Risks:

UTI or Urinary Track Infection could occur in some gastro bypass patients.

Bowel obstruction could also occur.

Foods that are not chewed properly could cause an obstruction of the stomach outlet. This can cause severe problems.

Chronic nutritional deficiencies may arise in some gastro bypass patients.

Protein, vitamin, and mineral deficiencies can also occur.

Food intolerance such as sugar, milk, or red meats could develop post gastro bypass surgery.

Fleeting hair loss can happen, especially during the brisk weight loss phase. The hair will grow back eventually, however.

There is also the risk of muscle mass loss.

If you are considering having a gastro bypass surgery, consider these pros and cons for a moment. You need to prepare yourself for the significant changes that can occur after the procedure. Do not go through it if you are having second thoughts. However, if you are serious about having this procedure done, and you have carefully weighed the benefits and risks and you still want to do it, then by all means, do so.

Before you can undergo a gastric bypass surgery, you will have to follow a special diet recommended by a licensed doctor. The diet that you will be asked to follow will help you lose up to about 8% of your weight. In most cases, a nutritionist is assigned to assist you with your gastric bypass diet.

The diet that will be given to you will be a low calorie one, as this will help you lose the pounds that you need to shed off. Normally, along with the diet, you will be given special counseling that will help prepare you for the surgery.

One of the effects of a gastric bypass surgery is decreased tolerance for sugar. This is one of the reasons why nutritionists often advice their patients to start minimizing their intake of sugar in the process of their gastric bypass diet. Doing so will help you adjust to the changes that will take place after the surgery, especially since sugar intake at that time can result to very uncomfortable symptoms. If you are addicted to sugar, you will find this phase of the diet as the most difficult.

After the surgery, adjustments will have to be made in terms of your diet. For one week or so, you will be required to fast on water because your body is still healing. This is done to make sure that the sutures will not leak; suture leaks can lead to infection and inflammation, and may even cause serious complications. Once the suture is healed, you will be allowed to slowly change your diet. This has to be done step-by-step, to ensure maximum safety.

At this stage of your gastric bypass diet, you will be allowed to take in broths and clear liquids. Examples of clear liquids include sugar-free gelatins, fruit juices, and protein fruit drinks. The next phase will have you moving on to taking in thin oatmeal, skim milk, yogurt, low fat cream-based soups, and other liquid foods. After these liquid foods, you will then be allowed by your doctor to take in small amounts of pureed, or any food that is combined with water, milk or low calorie gravy and then mixed in a food processor.

Eventually, your gastric bypass diet will allow you to finely chopped foods until your stomach is determined to be strong enough to take in whole foods. Your diet will last approximately one year, and if you do not cheat on your diet, you’ll shed off at least 75% of your excess weight by this time.

Following this strict after surgery diet is important because for three months, the small pouch in your stomach will be healing. Taking in food right after surgery will bring great risks and may lead you to gain a lot of weight; so it is vital for you to listen closely and heed the advice of your doctor and your nutritionist. Remember, it is essential for you to be constantly in touch with both your doctor and nutritionist because your gastric bypass diet is quite low in calories and you will need to take in supplements. Finally, remember that with the correct attitude and a positive outlook in life, nothing is impossible.
